Experience, Background and Services:
Philippa is recognised as one of the leading human trafficking and modern slavery lawyers. She specialises in forced criminality and in defending victims of modern slavery who have prosecuted and/or convicted of criminal offences. She is a consultant Solicitor Advocate and is head of the modern slavery and human trafficking department at Birds Solicitors.

She is heavily involved in the training of lawyers, law enforcement, NGO’s and other professionals on human trafficking and regularly lectures on the topic. She has provided reports, recommendations and published articles on many areas of modern slavery. Philippa was advisor to The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in relation to the UK's draft Modern Slavery Bill (now enacted). She is referred cases and consulted by most of the UK’s anti- trafficking and slavery organisations.

Philippa has provided the official Law Society training on the topic and assisted in drafting the practice note on human trafficking and modern slavery. She has successfully brought a significant number of appeals to the Court of Appeal for victims of human trafficking who have been forced into criminality. She represented THN in the landmark case R v L & Ors [2013] EWCA Crim 991; [2013] 2 Cr App R 23 which is the one of the leading authorities on non punishment of human trafficking victims. Philippa advises on all criminal proceedings including, Crown Court, Court of Appeal and matters at International Criminal Court. She advises on Judicial Reviews against the Competent Authority for negative trafficking determinations, as well as Miscarriages of Justice Compensation for victims of trafficking. Philippa is also involved in advising organisations on Modern Slavery Compliance.
